About the Laboratory

Welcome to the website of the Laboratory for Brain Extracellular Matrix Research.

The international Laboratory for Brain Extracellular Matrix Research has been established at the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod (SUNN) at the end of 2010 as a structural unit to conduct research on the project “The brain extracellular matrix as a determinant of intercellular communication and a target for therapeutic interventions”.

A three floor building restored by SUNN to accommodate the new laboratory and a modern animal facility.

This project was presented by SUNN to the competition of Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation providing grants of the Russian Government to support scientific research under the supervision of leading scientists at Russian institutions of higher education (Resolution No. 220). The project succeeded among the first 40 winners (contract № 11.G34.31.0012 on November 28, 2010) and was supported by the "megagrant" of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation to invite leading scientists from all over the world.

Another important aspect is that the new laboratory contributes to the problem-oriented training of under- and postgraduate students by providing an access to modern experimental facilities and reagents, and serves as a source of inspiration for work on fundamental problems in Biology. Several researchers from SUNN have been trained at the Italian Institute of Technology (Italy), Hannover Medical School (Germany) and RIKEN (Japan) and experts in the fields of ECM research and molecular neurobiology are invited to the SUNN.
